Where he lives – In
his parent’s house in Corus.
Place of Birth – In his father’s manor house, which is in Fylron,
a village to the West of the Coastal Hills.
Date of Birth - Midsummer
Age - 15
Job -
NA
Status – Noble
Location – Little Court
Magic – Mathew has
no gift, but is used to magic as his mother and younger sister have it. He would like to have it, if only so that he
had a particular talent. However, he also thinks that it would be a lot of work to learn how to use it properly, and does
not want the extra work.
Family – Father – Sir Samuel of Fylron Mother
– Lucinda, Brother – Patrick, a third year squire (who has been highly praised
by everyone for his fighting ability etc) Sister – Beatrice (12), who has a strong healing gift and wants
to go to the University. His parents support all of their children, and hope for all of them to have illustrious careers.
Although Mathew is the least talented, he has never been overlooked. His siblings tend to tease him a bit, but they are generally
friendly. Mathew’s parents are strong supporters of the progressive royal policies.
Appearance –
Mathew is tall and lean, without much muscle. He has quite pale skin as he spends a lot of time indoors. His face is quite
long and thin. He has brown eyes and brown hair which falls to below the ears. His hair is always messy and generally loose,
on the few occasions he ties it back it will always escape its bonds. He has no scars, as he has always had access to a healer
when injured. He has a small birthmark on his shoulder, but given the clothing of the time this is never on display. He generally
keeps himself clean, but does forget to bathe at times. Generally people don’t remember him as his looks are not very
striking.
Clothing – Mathew loves fashionable clothes, but is also very scruffy. So he will wear a silk
shirt with full sleeves and tight cuffs but roll the sleeves up to the elbow and have several buttons at the collar undone.
He favours dark colours, as he thinks that they make him look more dramatic.
Personality – Mathew is
very lazy, he tends to do only those things which he enjoys, but quickly tires of them. He is well educated and intelligent
but cannot be bothered to use these advantages. He has always enjoyed music, and is a reasonably talented lute player. He
could be good – if he bothered to practice.
Mathew is easygoing and friendly, automatically thinking the best of everyone. This leads to problems when people
turn out to be less than perfect, Mathew has been tricked by merchants several times, but does not learn from his experiences.
He is not a natural leader, but follows a strong person’s lead.
Indecisiveness is another problem for Mathew. Despite the support and options offered to him he does not have any
idea of what he wants to do with his life, he drifts around waiting for things to happen to him. He is not dissatisfied with
his life; rather he cannot focus to do anything in particular.
Mathew does not lose his temper as he doesn’t tend to feel insulted by things which people do or say. However,
he would lose his temper if he was compared unfavourably to his siblings as he feels very embarrassed about being the only
one who is not particularly talented. Some people are infuriated buy Mathew’s ability to remain calm (such as his older
brother) and others admire it.
Mathew does not feel strongly about religion, he goes through the motions and accepts that the gods exist. His ideas
about politics are all from his parents. Most of the time he finds discussions on politics boring, but sometimes an idea will
interest him. When this happens he’ll find out as much as he can about the issue, asking people and thinking about it.
Such issues are generally ones to do with unfairness, as they challenge his belief that everyone is kind. He does genuinely
want to help people improve their lives, but does not have the commitment to focus on a scheme.
Strengths – Mathew can get on well with anyone, and has the ability to make interesting conversation.
He listens well to what people have to say, and generally appears to agree with them. As he does not enter into heated debates,
people feel comfortable around him. He enjoys all the normal pastimes for nobles, so finds it easy to enjoy people’s
company. People never feel threatened by him, because he does not seem to be particularly good at anything.
Weaknesses
– Mathew is immature, and unable to judge people. As he is naïve he is easily tricked, and his lack of perception
can lead to him making tactless comments or being drawn into situations which he is unable to get out of. His lack of focus
is another side of his immaturity; it means that he can never settle to get things done whether the thing is learning a piece
of music or forming a view on Royal policy. His parents hope that as he becomes more mature, these weaknesses will become
less of a problem.
History – Mathew was born in his father’s manor, and has lived there all his
life, with brief trips elsewhere. When he was ten, he was offered the chance to become a page, but decided against it as the
page training was too much work. He also felt that he would never be able to live up to the high standard that his older brother
set. His parents felt that he would probably do better with study at home, particularly as they wanted him to become involved
in politics. He also decided against a university career, telling his parents that it would be pointless as he had no gift.
He was educated by private tutors at home. He was thought to be less intelligent than he actually is, as he never worked.
Throughout his life he has felt slightly inferior to his siblings, as they are both very talented. His parents have always
hoped that he would get involved with politics, so his lessons have focused on aspects such as history and public speaking.
His parents sent him to the Little Court in the hope that he might become involved in politics – they agree with Lady
Alexia’s views on royal policies and think that the Little Court would be a good place for him to learn about court
life. They hope that he can progress on to become influential in the main Court. When the decision was made for him to be sent
to the Little Court he was pleased, as he saw it as an opportunity to meet people, make friends and continue with his favourite
pastimes. He also wanted to get away from home, so that he would be with people who would not compare him to his siblings.
What’s
your character most ashamed of? – Although he would never admit it, Mathew wishes that he was more talented and
harder working. He is always overshadowed by his siblings, and is ashamed that he cannot live up to the same standards as
them.
What makes your character unique? – Mathew has no special talents, and no purpose. He likes
fine clothes without being smart and is able to keep his temper most of the time.
